Neighbours favourite calls out "poor form" after show axe was leaked to the press again

The star admitted it was "disappointing".

Neighbours star Rebekah Elmaloglou has called out "poor form" after the show's axe was leaked to the press before the cast and crew found out.

The soap was shockingly cancelled by streamer Amazon last month, the second time it has happened after its initial axe in 2022, with the Terese Willis actor revealing how she learned about the news from the media.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Rebekah recalled opening her phone upon returning to Australia after the cast's UK anniversary tour.

"I’d landed at about two in the morning, had a couple of hours sleep then woke up to lots of text messages and phone calls from the team wanting to speak to me ASAP," she shared, saying "the story had been leaked to the press".

"The producers were actually waiting to meet with the cast and crew once we got back from the UK to tell us all."

The star explained that "they had to gather everyone in the studio as soon as they arrived at 7.30am before they heard it through the grapevine".

That happened last time, which is pretty poor form and disappointing," Rebekah added. "But it’s not so much about how we found out, it’s just a shame Neighbours has been cancelled again."

The star admitted that she had "feelings" and "doubts" about the show's future beforehand, though "honestly thought [they] might get a little longer".

"Maybe another year would have been nice," she continued. "I was of the understanding the show had been doing well but I don’t really know the ins and outs.

"They’ve made their decision, it’s business, but it’s really disappointing, especially for our UK fans. After the success of the anniversary tour, it doesn’t make sense.

"I’ve seen a lot of support, I know the fans are doing petitions, which is so appreciated. It worked last time, maybe it will again?"

It was previously reported by TV Tonight that the cast and crew were not informed about the axe before it emerged in the media.

Meanwhile, Neighbours boss Jason Herbison has revealed why Amazon decided to cancel the show despite strong ratings, explaining that following service Freevee being shut down, the soap was "simply not part of their content strategy going forward".
