Home and Away confirms shocking arrival at Perri Hayes' trial
Perri's world is turned upside-down.
Home and Away's Perri Hayes comes face-to-face with his long-lost mother Kaia on UK screens next week.
Perri's world is turned upside-down as Kaia makes an unexpected appearance to defend him in court.
Viewers know that Perri is facing an uncertain future after killing his father Carl in self-defence.
The troubled teenager has been charged with murder, as police investigators have cast doubt on his claims that he was fighting off Carl in the Paratas' backyard pool.
Next week, Perri's mentor Tane Parata receives a disheartening update from the young man's lawyer, Jane. Tane is told that no independent witnesses have been found who can verify Perri's allegations over Carl's abuse.
This throws Perri's entire defence into question and he briefly considers running away from Summer Bay. Tane won't hear of it and encourages Perri to stay and fight.
The next day, Perri's trial begins and police constable Rose Delaney is first to give evidence. She confirms that she knew about allegations of Carl's abusive behaviour, but the prosecutor interrupts and points out that Carl isn't on trial in this case.
Tane is next up and he shares his own knowledge of Perri's traumatic history with Carl.
When the questioning gets difficult, Tane loses his temper in the witness box and risks making things worse for Perri.
As the court adjourns for a break, Perri's lawyer Jane warns that things aren't looking good for him.
After receiving a mysterious text, Jane rushes off and she later returns with a last-minute witness – Perri's mother Kaia Hayes. Perri can't believe his eyes as he'd previously been told by Carl that Kaia was dead.
As Kaia enters the witness box, she confirms that Carl was an abusive husband and father.
Kaia also explains that she left the family home years ago because Carl threatened to kill Perri if she didn't.
The court takes another break and Kaia heads over to speak to Perri, but he harshly rejects her and storms off.
As Perri has many unanswered questions, Tane encourages him to speak to his mum – especially as she may have just saved him from a prison sentence.
Tane's prediction comes true as the jury later returns a not guilty verdict, but it's clear that there'll now be a long road ahead for Perri and his mum. Can Perri ever forgive Kaia for walking out on him?
Home and Away airs these scenes on Thursday, January 30 and Friday, January 31 on Channel 5.
