TV star ‘certain’ that he’d be axed from long-running and popular series

Home and Away star Steve Peacocke feared his character Darryl Braxton would be killed off.

Home and Away star Steve Peacocke expressed his fears of being axed from the soap when he joined more than 10 years ago.

The actor, who played Darryl Braxton in the Australian soap, became a fan favourite and won two Logie Awards for Most Popular Actor for his role.

However, despite the popularity the 42-year-old thought Darryl would be killed off within months of his arrival.

He told TV Week: ‘When I started work in Home and Away, I was so nervous for the first two or three months – I was certain I was going to lose my job.’

He added: ‘When I came home from work, I could taste blood in my mouth just from talking at the back of my throat, which is the first thing you do when you’re nervous. Everything constricts.

‘I was like a ball of tension until the first episodes went to air and I realised that the audience kind of liked it and it was okay.’

Steve announced his departure from Home and Away in February 2015, and his last appearance was in June that year.

He later stretched his wings and attempted the Hollywood scene, so he and wife Bridgette Sneddon moved to Los Angeles.

‘For me, I left Home and Away at the perfect time,’ he told TV Week after his departure from the show. ‘With any performance, you leave when they’re saying, ‘This is really good’, instead of “Oh gosh, get rid of this guy”‘.

Steve starred in the romantic drama Me Before You alongside Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, before eventually returning to Australia.
