Home and Away star Jacqui Purvis explains Felicity Newman's wedding doubts
"She is very overwhelmed and starts to worry."
Home and Away star Jacqui Purvis has spoken to about her character Felicity Newman's big proposal storyline.
Next week's episodes on Channel 5 see Tane Parata pop the question to Felicity in a romantic moment near the Summer Bay lighthouse.
Tane goes all-out by preparing a champagne picnic and asking local band Lyrik to perform an acoustic love song. Tane's nephew Nikau and Felicity's brother Cash are also invited along to witness events unfold.
Felicity accepts the proposal, but later confides in her business partner Mackenzie Booth by admitting that she isn't sure whether she made the right decision..
"They do, because they're all just there watching. Felicity is like: 'Oh my God, now I have to say things and make a choice!' It's all very intense and overwhelming. She just says yes, but then it's a case of: 'Wait a second, we haven't actually spoken about this and I don't know how I feel about it'.
"It's definitely a little bit of peer pressure, but also that Felicity has a fear of commitment and a fear of failure. That all seeps in, so she is very overwhelmed and starts to worry."
Asked whether the proposal came too soon, Jacqui replied: "As Jacqui, I am actually a little bit like Flick in that sense! Marriage is definitely not at the forefront of my mind. I was a little bit like: 'Whoa, that came up soon!'
But I also understood it from the story point of view and the characters' point of view. They're just so perfect together, so that's the next step and it actually doesn't change anything. I thought it was right.
"I would say that Felicity should absolutely be honest with Tane. At first, Flick has Mac to confide in. She knows that she wants to be with Tane for the rest of her life, she just doesn't know about marriage and she doesn't know if that's what she wants.
"Felicity is just trying to process it first, so she can work out what she actually feels. Then when she knows exactly, she can tell Tane what's going on. It's just that processing of emotions first."
Jacqui also spoke about her surprise at how much fans have invested in Felicity and Tane's relationship over the past year.
Asked if she always knew they'd become a fan-favourite couple, Jacqui replied: "Oh no! We had no idea.
"I met Ethan [Browne, who plays Tane] and we did know that we worked so well together. We're just so comfortable, it works and the chemistry is great. We're good friends, so it was easy and it felt good. We realised that we had a good working relationship, but we had no idea that they would become a fan-favourite couple."
On whether she wants the pair to make it down the aisle, Jacqui added: "Yeah, it would be great. As an actor, you just want to do as many stories as possible. It would be so much fun, but who knows, you'll have to tune in to see what happens!"
Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.45pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR. First-look screenings air at 6.30pm on 5STAR and the show also streams on My5.
