Neighbours' Australian network discusses "slim" hope of return for soap

 The soap has come to an end after 37 years.

Neighbours has bowed out after 37 years, with its finale airing in Australia last night (July 28), ahead of the UK broadcast tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm.

The long-running soap's end came after it was cancelled by Channel 5 earlier this year, much to the disappointment of fans.

Now, speaking to The Herald Sun, Beverley McGarvey, the head of Channel 10, Neighbours' Australian network, has said there's a "slim" chance we could return to Ramsey Street one day, whether it be in special one-off episodes or reunion shows.

"I also wouldn’t rule out that some day Fremantle will be able to create an environment where they can bring it back in some way. It’s happened to shows before," she said.

"I still cling to the slim, optimistic hope that would be possible because there’s great appetite for content everywhere."

The Neighbours finale received the soap highest ratings in 13 years when it aired on 10 Peach last night.

The special episode exceeded ratings expectations with 873,000 'five-city metro' viewers (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth) and 1.2 million viewers nationally, reaching a 1.4 million peak and becoming the show's biggest episode since 2009. For comparison, the show usually averages 100,000 viewers in Australia.

The soap has been pulling out all the stops to give it a finale worthy of nearly four decades on air, with big time former Neighbours stars such as Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie and Guy Pearce all returning to say goodbye.

The series finale will air in the UK on July 29 at 9pm on Channel 5.
