Neighbours star April Rose Pengilly has discussed attacks on social media
Neighbours star April Rose Pengilly has discussed attacks on social media, condemning users who send abusive and nasty messages.
Earlier this month, Sharon Johal spoke out against trolls who have been targeting her over Dipi and Pierce's affair. April had her co-star's back, urging people to "stop being mean", but has also experienced online abuse herself.
April, who plays Chloe Brennan, shared in an interview with Australia's The Daily Telegraph that she loves interacting with fans but some of the personal attacks, particularly on Facebook, are difficult to deal with.
"Every time my phone goes off, I don’t know if I am going to pick it up and find a nice message from a friend or a notification about a shoe sale or a horribly jarring personal attack," she explained.
"I am very sensitive and I do take it on. Sometimes it can hit a bit close to home."
April continued: "It is just so ugly what people can say online.
"It is horrible to read that kind of vitriol. It really shouldn’t be part of the job. It is such a strange thing that it has now become accepted that if you are doing some sort of job in the public eye, you should deal with it and develop a thick skin. It is not okay."
Chloe's current storyline is tied to Pierce and Dipi's affair. In the UK, she is around a week's away from discovering that her husband has been cheating on her.
In Australia, everyone is trying to cope with the fallout, which will eventually lead to Pierce saying goodbye to Ramsay Street.
Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
